"Ammonites are among the most famous and easily recognisable fossils, thanks to their characteristic coiled shells. Having first evolved more than 240 million years ago, they thrived in Jurassic seas, becoming a hugely successful group of animals. Unfortunately, these curious beasts finally succumbed around the same time as the dinosaurs, about 65 million years ago.

A creature of the sea, Ammonites were free swimming, closely related to squid and nautili. Like these modern relatives, Ammonites were predators, catching prey with their long tentacles whilst their shell was divided up into chambers, filled with liquid and gas, which kept them buoyant in the water. There were many different varieties, ranging in size from a penny... to a tractor tyre!

The shell, often perfectly preserved, resembles the coiled horn of a ram, which was the symbol for the Egyptian god ‘Ammon’, hence the name."
